A1/ 50/  ROBERT ANDERSON/ SCOTLAND/

The first tomb is for the Scotsman, Robert Anderson, from Eskbank, Edinburgh, who died in 1831 at a mature age in Florence. It is now a massive eroded ruin being sculpted from the local pietra serena, a sandstone that cannot cope with water, so any inscription was lost long ago, it only being identified by the number '50', but it copies the Scipio tomb in the Vatican, used also but in enduring marble in Sector F (F35/ HUGH JAMES ROSE).

A3/ 568/ ROBINA (WILSON) CATANI CAVALCANTI/ SCOTLAND
Next to the simple slab, on the lavender and box-lined path, is a vast tomb for Robina Wilson, also from Edinburgh, wife to Leopoldo Cattani Cavalcanti of Montecatini, who laments on its two inscriptions, one in Italian, the other in English, that they were never separated in marriage, but in death they must be, Protestants and Catholics then not being permitted to lie in the same consecrated soil. The laws now are more merciful. The inscription also gives her parents. From NDNB, Wikipedia entries on Andrew Wilson we learn that he was a landscape artist, admired even by Napoleon, and a dealer in Old Masters, such as were also A64/ AUGUSTUS WALLIS, A29/ WALTER SAVAGE LANDOR, both in Sector A, and Jackson Jarves, whose wife 'Libby', C5/ ELIZABETH (RUSSELL SWAIN) JARVES, and C63 , JAMES MILLINGEN, in Sector C.

Andrew Wilson, Landscape

Married like Elizabeth Barrett Browning for fifteen years, she has died in Montecatini in the 1855 cholera epidemic. (John Snow (1813–1858), found a link between cholera and contaminated drinking water in London in 1854.) The 1866 Mediterranean cholera epidemic will also affect this cemetery.  As with Elizabeth Barrett Browning's tomb, this grave was first elsewhere, then the body moved for a more conspicuous place for its present grand monument. We know from the cemetery's archives that she was later removed from Sector B (today's Sectors E and F) to Sector A for this conspicuous tomb, which Pietro Bazzanti copies from the base of the tomb of the Cardinal of Portugal by Antonio Rossellino in San Miniato, both having marvellous lions' claws. This husband, forbidden by law to be buried with her, has given his wife the most Catholic tomb possible, of a Cardinal, at the entrance of a Protestant cemetery. The Calvinist Swiss, specifically forbidding Romish crucifixes, candles, and the Virgin, did not realize its significance. There is a charming story Florentines tell of how Robert Browning is buried in the adjacent Misericordia Cemetery and that he comes every November 2nd at the Feast of the Dead to the 'English' Cemetery, collects his wife Elizabeth and together they walk the streets of Florence until dawn when they bow and curtsey to each other, then return to their respective tombs. But Robert is not buried in Florence. He lies instead in the Poets' Corner of Westminster Abbey. The story is far more likely of this lovingly-married couple than of that other. The tomb has been cleaned by Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu and Nicolae Ovrei under the supervision of Alberto Casciani of Meridiana Restauri.

A4/ 1362/ MANFRED WAGNIERE/ SVIZZERA
Sixteen years later than her burial a still-born Wagnière child is laid at Catherine Jane Penfold Baroncelli's feet. The father of the child, Alfred Wagniere, has no burial record in the cemetery archives nor any remaining tomb, yet is named conspicuously on the cemetery's gate: 'ALFRED WAGNIERE', perhaps in error. His Swiss banker relative is buried in Sector C (C6/ PIERRE SIMEON WAGNIERE) in a tomb with a book opened to Biblical verses one can no longer decipher, on a reading stand. The Swiss family, contributing financially to the nineteenth-century Duomo facade, have their stemma there. Descendants of the family in America came with their genealogy and the photograph of their stemma at the Duomo.

Five years later another foreign wife, Catherine Jane Penfold Baroncelli, this time English and from Sussex, married likewise to an Italian husband, this time for thirty years, dies of a violent disease, again likely cholera. Her brother, Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold, a medical doctor and vintner, successfully emigrated with his wife and daughter to Australia.

Behind the tomb of Catherine Jane Baroncelli is that of A6/ 988/ MARY (AUCRUM) YOUNG/ SCOTLAND
This tomb of yet another Scotswoman, Mary Young, is especially interesting. In its Italian inscription, of the dual language inscriptions such as we see with Robina Wilson and Catherine Jane Penfold, we learn that this widow of the minister of the Scots Church on London Wall came to Pisa where she founded a church and a school, always helping the poor, supported the freeing of Italy, as a scholar spent long hours in archives studying the life of Aonio Paleario, the Italian Renaissance Protestant who was hanged and burned as a heretic in Rome, 1570, publishing a book on him, of which our Mediatheca has one of its two volumes. Count Pietro Guicciardini was among those influenced by Paleario to study and contemplate upon the Bible, and who in turn had to pay the price of first imprisonment, then exile. Mary Young is much loved by her adopted daughter and her Italian son-in-law Carlo Matteucci. The tomb is sculpted with an anchor, a palm branch and an open book, representing both the Bible and her own published work. We have planted a palm at its base to honour her, and Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu has conserved its ironwork and cleaned its marble.

A9/ 1108/ KATIE ISABEL SPENCE/ ENGLAND and A5I/ A10/ 1009/ BEATRIX FANNY MARY SPENCE/ ENGLAND
Beatrix Fanny Mary and Katie Isabel Spence have two similarly heartbreaking little tombs, squares of marble surrounding spaces for two gardens, where we have planted roses, plumbago and mint. Their parents are part of the Blundell Spence family who also had the Villa Medici in Fiesole, to which Sara McCalmont in Sector E (E125) is connected, likewise the de Schmid burials for which we have no extant tombs. A further tomb of the family, Teresina Spence, wife to William Blundell Spence, sculpted by Odoardo Fantacchiotti, is in the Fiesole cemetery, having once been in the chapel of the Villa Medici, for which see the last chapter on the work of restoration by Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu. Other visitors at the Villa Medici were Holman Hunt, where he lived while sculpting his wife's tomb in Fiesole (B9), which is now next to Elizabeth Barrett Browning's (B8), and Iris Origo who well remembered it from her childhood.

The next tomb is for A11/ 806/ MILLICENT ANN LLOYD/ IRELAND
We know from the burial records that she is 25 years old. A spinster, she perhaps came to Florence because of tuberculosis. He was a Liverpool broker. Rev Henry Greene, Sector A (A51), Chaplain at Pisa and the Baths of Lucca, will marry his widow, Isabella Ellen Reynolds, the following year, 1876. Among our entries is Margaret Ann Reynolds, Sector B (B90), Piazza dell'Independenza, 9, who has William as her father, the family noted in the Times as from Liverpool, while Jane Caroline Reynolds (A104), who is unmarried, from Prato, though she is buried near him, instead has, perhaps erroneously, a Jeremiah Reynolds listed as her father. A13/ 801/ ANNIE JESSIE (MACKENZIE) SMITH/ SCOTLAND
Christopher Webb Smith and his wife, Annie Jessie MacKenzie Smith, who pre-deceased him, share a most beautiful sarcophagus, sculpted by Pietro Bazzanti, mirrored in that for Sophia Tennant (D18) in Sector D, both of which have been cleaned by Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu. Following Webb Smith's Civil Service in Bengal he also visited South Africa, publishing a book with his paintings of its culture and its wild life, now in our library as a gift from a member. In his retirement in Florence he served loyally with the Anglican Holy Trinity Church. Wikipedia adds that 'From 1849 to 1860 Smith worked on a critique of the 300 paintings in Florence's Pitti Gallery. Notes and Queries saw this tomb in Sector A a hundred years ago, giving its transcription as ' The Rev Robt. Maxwell Hanna, minister of the Free Church of Scotland at Anworth, Kirkkudbrightshire, for 6 yrs, and at Florence for 8 yrs, b. at Donahadee, Ireland, 9th Dec 1842, ob. 19 Dec, 1835, at 35', and as being beside that for A19/ RALPH HENDERSON MOOREHEAD. Pastor Luigi Santini: 'He was a Presbyterian minister in Scotland when, for reasons of health, he decided to move to Pisa. He became involved, at the urgent request of Reverend Steward of Leghorn, in clandestine Protestant activities. In 1849 he set up a Scottish chapel in Florence which the Brownings, among others, attended. He had religious propaganda sent him from Scotland, and often had difficulties with the police on account of his religious activities'.  He edited the Madiai Letters.    In the 1870s Harper's Monthly engraving Hanna's tomb is either one of these two, then covered in marble.

[We have many names to choose from for the following ruined tomb, 700 in all, but could suggest those of Catherine McKinnon and of Emma Carew, the first the governess of the Tsar of Russia, the second the first daughter of Emma Hamilton, also a governess on the Continent, her half-sister being Horatia Nelson.]

    In the 1870s Harper's Monthly engraving the unknown tomb is either one of these two, then covered in marble.

A19/ 1032/ RALPH HENDERSON MOOREHEAD/ AMERICA
A tomb broken long ago and then crudely patched together is for an eight-month-old American child, Ralph Moorehead. His father, William Gallogly Moorehead, and mother, Helen Moorehead, returned from Siena, where their children had been born, to Ohio, where he was President of the Presbyterian Xenia Theological College. Ralph's surviving brother was the anthropologist and archeologist Warren King Moorehead who admired Native American culture.

Charles Crosbie is from Sussex, loved by his wife and children. The National Archives note many documents and wills involving Charles Crosbie of Northlands and Donnington, among them the information that Northlands is mortgaged to Henry de la Belinaye (also buried in this Sector, A43), and another document mentioning that he now resides in Florence. While the Times' obituary of MARY DUVALL, A80, buried near him says she was his devoted servant and that they resided at the Villino Torrigiani. A22A/ 660/ JANE ROBIGLIO/ SCOTLAND

 

This could be the tomb of A24/ GEORGE MARTIN ROBIGLIO's Scots grandmother. Notes and Queries a hundred years ago saw it as 'Jane Robiglio, d. of Francis _____.' Then the tombstone was discovered in two broken pieces built into a wall. It is now mended and restored to its rightful place. The Webbs note that in some notes accompanying a National Portrait Gallery caricature which depicts Jane's father Francis Anderson, W.S. ('writer to the signet'), he was profoundly deaf and after years as a bachelor married his sister's maid, the lowly-born Miss Martin. When asked by the Earl of Wemyss why he had not chosen someone of higher rank, he replied that he had not 'fashed himself', i.e. been bothered, to court a fine lady, besides, he liked the lassie and she liked him. It seems that Miss Martin may have introduced the twin-bearing gene into the family, for it looks from the Scottish baptismal records as if this Jane had twin brothers, David and John, in addition to another Francis. The Bossi Pucci infant's mother is Adele Elizabeth Reader, married to Count Charles Louis Bossi-Pucci, explaining why the child is laid beside his English ancestor, A23/ WILLIAM READER. They lived at the Villa Bossi-Pucci in Montespertoli.

Is Uberto Bossi Pucci the son of a surviving child and heir of the Count and his wife Adele? The Italian descendants honour their English grandfather with a modern tomb incorportating the original stemma or coat of arms. Notes and Queries found the original version of the tomb impossible to identify a hundred years ago. But did identify his faithful servant's grave in Sector E, HENRY AUSTIN, E34.

Born in Warwick, he is the same generation as Keats, Shelley and Byron, but outlived them. His childhood love, the daughter of an Earl, and sister of another, the Honourable Rose Whitworth Aylmer, is buried in India, 1800, at 20. In 1910, BACSA (British Association of Cemeteries in South Asia), tells us, Walter Savage Landor's epitaph was added to her tomb:

He romantically sought to participate in the Peninsula battles against Napoleon as a volunteer. Having lost his childhood sweetheart to fever in India, while others, including 'Ianthe', rejected him, he proposed marriage to Julia Thuillier, the daughter of a bankrupt Swiss banker whom he met at a dance in Bath, the marriage an unhappy one. They first lived at Llanthony Abbey in Wales, then came to Italy. Pastor Luigi Santini wrote: 'An aristocrat, a Republican and a rebel, Landor left England for Florence in 1821, and arrived with a full-fledged reputation as an artist: his poems and prose attest to his great classical learning and his epigrams are forceful and moving. He was restless and eccentric, changed residence several times. Also extravagant and generous, he succeeded in amusing the Florentines (when he didn't terrify them) with his wit. In 1835 he bequeathed his Villa Gherardesca home to his son, Arnold, and returned to London, only to reappear in Florence in 1858. Finally, turned out by his wife and family, like a mad King Lear, he found refuge for a while with the compassionate Isa Blagden (Sector B, B42), but finished his days in squalor, in lodgings arranged for him by Robert Browning, in via della Chiesa, then the haunt of artists, under the care of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's former maid, Elizabeth (Lily) Wilson. A leader of the early English Romantic movement, his literary production was considerable. He was a fervent supporter of the Italian cause, to which the Brownings introduced him, and raised funds for the 'Garibaldini'.  He lived to a ripe old age, all but forgotten by the younger generation, but his name, as Swinburne wrote for his tombstone, is now forever united with that of Florence, his chosen home'. [See Giuliana Artom Treves, Golden Ring, pp. 38-53.] He collected Tuscan 'Primitive' paintings before Bernard Berenson did so. He was also a great lover of landscape gardening, not liking gardens to be too neat, too precise. His wife (jealous of Rose Aylmer?) did not attend his funeral and a stone was placed on his tomb that was so cheap it disintegrated and was replaced in 1946. His son Arnold (1819-1871) is buried in a magnificent tomb with a full-size sculpture of Walter's shrewish wife, Julia, on top of it in Sector F, F128, for which she must have paid a fortune. Later Professor Fiske of Cornell, the great Italian and Icelandic scholar, would acquire his villa (now the School of Music in San Domenico, Fiesole) and carefully photograph it as it was. For which see Patrick J. Stevens, 'Jennie's Gift' and Kristìn Bragadottìr, William Morris and Iceland. We are profoundly grateful for Jean Field's gift to us of the many volumes of Walter Savage Landor's writings, which we carried to his tomb in 2007, and to that of Rosa Madiai (F128), next to it, her imprisoned husband Francesco being the subject of WSL's last 'Imaginary Conversation', these now shelved in the Mediatheca 'Fioretta Mazzei'. The fourth son, John Morley Dennis, succeeded to his father’s property at Union Hill in County Westmeath, married Elizabeth Mander and left a son, Aldborough (d. 1879), and two daughters, Ellen (died unmarried) and Isabella Sophia, who married in 1850 Edgar Flower, JP., a well known art connoisseur and businessman, who lived between Middle Hill Park, Broadway, Worcester and the Hill in Stratford-upon-Avon. He was Chairman of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust until his death in 1904. The fifth and youngest son, the Rev. George Morley Dennis was born in 1803 and educated at Trinity College Dublin. He subsequently became Rector of Enniscoffey and Kilbride in Co. Westmeath. In 1832 he married Elizabeth (d. 23 March 1879), elder daughter and co-heiress of Captain Joseph McGwire, JP, of Cavan. They had seven sons and five daughters.

Again, this is one of the cemetery's few marriages between an American and an Italian. Her father was Benjamin Turner; her husband, Enrico Bianciardi, an engineer associated with the Valdensian Church in Tuscany, who proclaims his love for her. In 1899 he publishes the Proceedings of the First International Congress on Childhood held in Florence, October 1896, as well as a book on Reminiscences.

A36/ 1217/ ANNA MARIA (PEACE) HORNER/ AMERICA
Her father, Joseph Peace, was born in Barbadoes, May 1, 1771. He came to America with his father, and settled at Charleston, SC, where he was a prosperous merchant for a number of years; but, becoming dissatisfied with his surroundings, especially with the practices of slavery and its attendant evils, he removed to Philadelphia, Pa. About the time of the birth of his son, Edward, his place of residence was on the corner of Sixth and Walnut Streets, opposite Washington Square. He died at Philadelphia, March 31, 1826. An Inman Horner was born on August 25, 1846 in Philadelphia to Alfred Horner and Elizabeth Driver White (a nephew?). He enrolled in 1861 as a member of the University of Pennsylvania College Class of 1865. He became a member of the Philomathean Society, the University Chess Club and the Zeta Psi fraternity before leaving at the close of sophomore year. Becoming a lawyer; he served as vice-president of the Philadelphia Law Academy in 1871. He was also a member of the American Philosophical Society and the Numismatic and Antiquarian Society. He died in Philadelphia on November 28, 1912. The dove on her tomb will be reflected in the post-1874 tomb of  Carolina Banchi Guarducci in Sector AB (AB9).

His maternal grandfather was General Lord Robert Edward Henry Somerset, his grandmother, Lady Louisa Augusta Courtenay, daughter of William Courtenay, 8th Earl of Devon, his father, Horace Marryat, wrote travel books about Scandinavia, while his uncle was Captain Frederick Marryat who wrote marine novels and who is discussed in Richard Hengist Horne, A New Spirit of the Age. The 1871 Census recorded him as an active Lieutenant in Rifle Brigade at Dover Castle. He was unmarried at that time. He was born, 19 November 1799, the younger son and third of four children of the Marquis Armand Marie de la Belinaye (d. 1836) by his wife Marie Louise Julia (1771-1859), Breton aristocrats who emigrated at the time of French Revolution. His parents were married in a Roman Catholic chapel in London and later re-married in a civil service in Paris, 15 August 1821. He and his older brother Armand were educated in part at the French Academy, Penn, near Beaconsfield, Bucks. He qualified as a surgeon, had a Harley Street practice from 1823 to 1842, and served as physician to the French, Austrian, and Russian Embassies, as Physician Extraordinaire to the Duchess of Kent, and as surgeon to an Italian troupe of opera singers which included Giulia Grisi. During this time he dropped his title, resuming it after 1842 when he closed his medical practice, for instance, in October 1836 he received a ticket of admission to the British Museum Reading Room as "Henry Belinaye, Esq." He lived at 17 George Street, Hanover Square; later in Fulham; married before 1840; was widowed before May 1847, when he married Sarah Maunch. By the first marriage he had at least one daughter, Evelina Anne, who in 1858 married Thomas Lance. Charlotte Emilia Plumptre has died at Isa Blagden's Bellosguardo. She, like Elizabeth, may be part of the Spiritualists group who clustered there. NDNB/Wikipedia entries: Prior to the breaking out of the Crimean War he was dispatched on a special mission early in 1854 to the expected seat of war, and traversed on his mission Serbia, Bulgaria, and part of Roumelia, crossing the Balkans on his route. He was subsequently for a short time principal medical officer with the army, and served with it in the field as senior deputy inspector-general, and was present in this capacity and attached to headquarters at the time of the affair of Bulganac, the Alma, capture of Balaklava, battles of Balaklava and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol. His rewards were a medal with four clasps, the fourth class of the Medjidie, and the Turkish medal. He was gazetted C.B. on 4 February 1856, became K.C.B. on 20 May 1871, and was named honorary physician to the Queen on 21 November 1865. On 19 July 1859 he was promoted to be an inspector-general of the medical department in Cape Town, and on 1 May in the following year was placed on half-pay and received a special pension for distinguished services. He had married, on 27 February 1844, Elizabeth Campbell, only daughter of George Gibson of Leith. He died at 34 Via Montebello, Florence, on 24 January 1876, and his will was proved on 21 March under £12,000. His widow has lent his medals from the Crimea to the sculptor for his tomb and they are replicated exactly, only in white marble, not colour. These photographs come from his descendant, Robin Dumbreck. Sir David and Florence Nightingale would have known each other.

A49/ 1343/ JANE (MILLER DICKSON) GORDON/ ENGLAND
Her father-in-law, William Conway Gordon, natural son of Lord William Gordon, entered the Bengal service in 1815, belonging to the 53rd Native Infantry. His portrait was painted when he was A.D.C. to Sir Peregrine Maitland in Madras. He married Louisa, daughter of Brigadier-General J. Vanrenen, Honourable East India Company's Service, born in 1833, he returned to England in 1842, and died in 1882. His first son, William George Conway Gordon, Times, 1851, promoted from ensign in the 91st to lieutenant, in 1854 becoming captain, in the Registrar General's index married Jane at Berwick in 1857, and died the following year. His brothers were Francis Ingram Conway-Gordon, Lewis Conway-Gordon and Charles Van Renen Conway-Gordon. The choice of the passage from Revelations may be prompted by that for Charlotte Plumptre (A45).

Lucy (Oliver) Ives, daughter of a Devonshire Thomas Oliver, has a beautiful tomb sculpted by Giuseppe Bondi, with a cross surrounded by bas relief ivy leaves in an arched stele. A Thomas Oliver from Devonshire was hanged for a murder in 1836. This may explain why her mother has not given her name, only her initials, upon the tomb. The tombstone shows the boy flying to heaven above the view of Florence from their Montughi villa. One smiles at the naming of the other children, including 'Garibaldi'. Pastor Luigi Santini describes the father as a 'follower of Kossuth who was sentenced to death in absentia after the Hungarian Revolution, 1852. For two years the father's salon in a villa in S. Margherita a Montici was the liveliest in town. Widely read and of democratic convictions, he financed the popular newsparer Il Progresso. In 1864-65, Bakunin, with whom he had long been in contact, stayed at his home. He returned to Hungary in 1866'. The parents, Ferenc and Teresa, publish a book on their impressions of the United States, while travelling there with Kossuth, titled, White, Red, Black. A year before his son's death Ferenc Pulszky was fighting with Garibaldi at Rome.  Thomas Adolphus Trollope, What I Remember, II. 233-243, quotes Franz Pulszky's letter to him, p.239, naming his surviving children, Augustus, Charles, Polixena, and Garibaldi, Anna Tuskes sends the file of a book on Ferenz Pulszky. Luca Bernardini discusses him in a CBIII conference paper. The father's strange tomb in Budapest copies an archeological find.

His maternal grandfather Peter Degraves was an entrepreneur who was frequently imprisoned but successful in building mills, a brewery and ships in Tasmania. James Lukin Davis is our lone Austrialian burial, sent on a world tour for his education, he died of typhoid fever in Florence. George Cramm laid down the Royal Charter, ordered by Charles Moore and Company of Liverpool, launching her on the River Dee in 1855. Gibbs Bright and Company bought her in an unfinished state, taking over the hull of this iron sailing ship after her original builder failed, and went bankrupt. William Patterson now completed the vessel to the new owner's specifications, the ship destined for the Australian run. Made from steel with clipper lines, the engine was added to avoid the ship becoming becalmed in the Doldrums, and designed to carry up to 600 passengers, but with a limited cargo capacity. The Royal Charter was the fastest ship plying the route between Liverpool and Australia, usually making the trip in under 60 days'. This ship's list gives the parents: Mr James Davis, 48, Mrs Louisa Davis, 40, Derwent Davis, 10, Walter Davis, 12, Miss Sophia Davis, 14, Miss Florence Davis, 18. Louisa's sister, Ellen Fenwick, 28, was also on board with her four children, Ellen, 9, Charles, 8, Rosa, 5, and an infant, 1. When the bodies of James and Louisa Davis were recovered, they were locked in each other’s arms. Tony Fleetwood-Wilson writes: 'James Lukin Davis was one of the three surviving children of James Davis and his wife, Louisa née Degraves. (Louisa was the eldest sister of my great-grandmother, Lady Deborah Wilson, née Degraves, of Hobart). James, Louisa and four of their children died on the Royal Charter in 1859. The three eldest children had remained in Hobart, where their aunts and uncles lived, to continue their education. After the death of James Lukin on a visit to Florence, just over four years later, there remained only Louisa Sophia and Charles Percy. Louisa Sophia married in 1875 but died in 1878 after the birth of a son. Thus only Charles Percy, of the seven children, lived a normal life span'. We should like to chisel all their names on the opposite side of James Lukin Davis' tomb. National Gallery online: 'Born at Merton in England, in 1788 Wallis travelled to Italy, visiting Rome, Naples where he painted the surrounding countryside, and Sicily. He became a member of the Royal Academy in 1806, and operated as an art dealer in Italy, and later Spain, most often working for British clients. He settled in Heidelberg in 1812, but returned to Italy in 1817 where he taught at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and painted frescoes and portraits. He died in Florence in 1847'. Stefano Tumidei adds that he came to Italy accompanying George Greville Earl of Warwick, was friends with the Icelandic sculptor Thorwaldson and with Goethe, many of his paintings for their strong colouring being more favoured in Russia. His career is similar to Andrew Wilson's. A monographic book on him was published by Monika von Wild in 1966. Alyson Price: Margaret Edmund Zileri died in Florence in 1872, aged only 49. Besides Joanna Horner Zileri (A81), Margaret's tomb informs us that she had another child, Anne Susie Zileri, called after Susan’s mother and perhaps Susan herself. Did the Zileris return to Florence in 1868 with the Horner sisters? Did they dig up and transport their child’s remains and tombstone because the sisters planned a prolonged stay in Florence and the Zileris could not bear to leave their child behind? It is safe to assume that this was the case. The loyalty of Margaret and Massimiliano was well repaid by the sisters. When Margaret Edmund’s husband Massimiliano Zileri himself died six years after his wife he was buried in the Allori cemetery outside Florence. The couple’s second child Anne Susie Zileri was left an orphan. This child became the ward of the Horner sisters. She gave Susan Horner’s Diary to the British Institute of Florence before her death in 1964.

The archival records indicate that Michelanglo Galeazzi is English, his wife the now twice-widowed Grace Pennefather. The very beautiful small sarcophagus by Paolo Bazzanti was commissioned by his widow and has been repaired and cleaned by Gheorghe Petrache and Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu; it lies in the open space planted with daffodils by Margherita Petrache towards the bottom of Sector A. The Earls of Mount Cashell descend from the elder Stephen, the Moores of Barne from the younger Thomas, of the two sons of Richard Moore. In 1833 Stephen Charles Moore of Barne married Anna eldest daughter of Colonel Kingsmill Pennefather and they had three sons and three daughters. At the time of Griffith's Valuation the Moore estate was mainly located in the parishes of Inishlounaght and Newchapel, barony of Iffa and Offa East. A86/ 256/ CATHERINE (PENNEFATHER) SAVILE & IL FIGLIO HENRY SAVILE/ IRELAND
JL Maquay, Diaries: 7/8/1840 'Kate Pennyfather to marry Mr Savile'. He believes this all rather hasty. 18/5/1842. 'Savile was arrested.' He visits him in prison. 1/6/1842 'Savile released today.' 371/1843 'Mrs Savile died on Sunday, saw Savile today very much affected. 4/1/1843 her funeral. 'Savile could hardly be kept up supported by Lord Pellingham [Pollington] and Col Lindsay'. The surviving son is 'William Savile, Esquire, Deputy-Lieutenant for the county of Cardigan, late Captain 9th Queen's Royal Lancers. Born October 8, 1841, being the only surviving son of Henry Alexander Savile, commonly known as the Honourable Henry Alexander Savile, second son of the Right Honourable the third Earl of Mexborough, by his wife Catherine, third daughter of Kingsmill Pennefather of New Park, in the county of Tipperary'. The Webbs add: Savile’s problem was simply wanton extravagance and consequent debt. His arrest  was at the instigation of [B122/ SAMUEL LOWE], the well-known shopkeeper.   Shortly after his release on 1 June, Savile must have returned to the British Isles, for on 26 July, the Freeman’s Journal, a Dublin paper, carried a report of a case from the Insolvent Debtors’ Court, as follows: 'The only one of any interest amongst them was that of the Hon Henry Alexander Savile, a son of Lord Mexboro', an English nobleman.  This insolvent was opposed by several creditors, mostly foreigners.  The amount of debts returned on his schedule was upwards of 9300l, for 1782L of which he alleged he had received no value.  The insolvent, it appeared, held a commission in the 10^th Hussars, but which he sold out in 1834;  since then he had chiefly resided on the Continent, where he met Miss Pennefather, an Irish lady, to whom he was married in August last.   He had come over to this country in May to look after some property, when he was arrested by one of his English creditors… [Examined]  He said he was married last August, at Florence, in Italy.  There was a settlement made by his wife, to which he was a party, of course.  The clergyman who married him was witness to the settlement.  There were present Captain Pakenham, and several gentlemen connected with [the] English embassy, where the marriage ceremony was performed.  The settlement was drawn up by Mr Pakenham, and executed before the marriage.  His father, Lord Mexborough, had six sons; he allowed him about 400l  a year from  the time he entered the army in 1827.  He purchased a large quantity of jewellery and some gold watches.  There was a valuable gold horizontal watch bought amongst these articles; he made a present of it to a lady of pleasure, whose name he did not know.   Other valuables, other debts, and other difficulties.  Contracted a debt at Brussels when coming home; but as his father had approved of his marriage, he thought that this, with the other debts, would be paid.  He got 500l from Mr Pakenham, and out of that he bought a carriage for 180l, which was at present in pawn at Brussels with a man to whom he owed 50l.  Was arrested on the 26^th of May, when on board the packet at Dublin going to England.  Had a carriage on board when arrested, but it was a job belonging to a Mr Beaumont in London.  Contracted a debt of 200l at Malta with a person who acted as a banker; never paid him any of that sum.  Had another very valuable dressing case, which he had left in pawn at Florence; it was a foreign dressing case, and he could not bring it to England.  Has no property but the trifle of jewellery his wife has, but he has great expectations.  The wife was a Miss Pennefather, who had no money - nor had he himself when married - but she has a yearly property of about 200l, payable out of land in Tipperary, near Fetlerea. Sold out his commission in the 210^th Hussars in  1833 - spent the money obtained for it; spent at the rate of more than 1,000l  a year, although his father allowed him only about 400l a year. In the course of discussion, it is represented that he had never contracted a debt by making false representations, and that some at least of his creditors belonged to that class that battened on extravagant young men.   A letter from J.A. Bridgnorth & Son, on behalf of a foreign creditor, and dated Florence, 10 July 1841, is produced: 'As we do not wish nor intend to oppose the discharge from prison of the said H.A. Saville, Esq., although we are his creditors for bills not paid and lawfully protested, we will take no steps, as we are aware of the honourable character of the said gentleman, who no doubt will prove it as soon as possible, not only to us, but to all persons acquainted with him.'   Judgement is deferred to the next day, and does not seem to be reported.  The fact that Savile was a son of Lord Mexborough gives a clue as to who Lord Pollington was – the eldest son, Henry’s elder brother. Though space was left for her husband, who became the second Viscount Gough, to lie beside his wife he is instead interred in the family's chapel in Ireland. NDBD and Wikipedia have entries for her father-in-law, the first Viscount, Hugh Gough, participant under Wellington in the Peninsula battles, then Madras and China, and her husband, who served, following her death, under his father in India and China: 'He married firstly Sarah-Elizabeth Palliser on 17 October 1840, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Wray Palliser and Mary Challoner of Derrylusken and Coagh, Co Wexford, Ireland). He married secondly on 3 June 1846, Jane Arbuthnot (b 22 October 1816 in Edinburgh d 3/2/1892), the daughter of George Arbuthnot, 1st of Elderslie (1772-1843) and Elizabeth (Eliza) Fraser (1792-1834), who had 3 children'.  The Gough, Arbuthnot, Popham (Sector D, D25/ HARCOURT POPHAM, D40/ SIR RICHARD KEITH ARBUTHNOT), Pakenham (Sector E, E118/ ELIZABETH ISABELLA PAKENHAM/ CAROLINE EMILY (THOMPSON/POPHAM) PAKENHAM ) families are interconnected. The fifth Viscount Gough arranged for the restoration of his relative/almost ancestress' tomb. Elizabeth Maria Stisted Wood and her five-year-old daughter, Luisa Clotilda, Clotilda being the name of the 'Queen of Lucca'. See the tomb of Catherine Swinny, mother of Clotilda Stisted, above at A6F 229. Colonel Henry Stisted's tomb is at Bagni di Lucca. General Sir Henry William Stisted, his nephew and Mrs Wood's brother, served in India and Canada; in 1845, at Florence, he married Maria Katherine Eliza Burton (1823–1894), sister of explorer Sir Richard Francis Burton. Their daughter, Georgiana Martha Stisted (1846–1903), published The True Life of Captain Sir Richard Burton. Are A110/ BIANCA (BURTON) BANCHINI, A27/ WALTER BURTON, buried nearby, also from the explorer's family? This tomb is erected by her husband and their six children who not only are related to the Stisteds of Bagni di Lucca but also have made good marriages into Italian society. There are references to the Stisteds in Thomas Adolphus Trollope's What I Remember and Giuliana Artom Treves' The Golden Ring. One smiles at the spelling of Cheshire as 'Cheschire'. One of several bilingual burials, this tomb takes the form of a four poster bed in cast iron conserved by Daniel-Claudiu Dumitrescu. We have tried to plant roses and other climbing plants here such as bourgonvillea but the iron posts in the summer always become too hot for such to survive.

His grandmother is Elisa Mackrill, likely from Lincolnshire. His tomb inscription, which notes he has served Italian freedom as a soldier, is in Italian, hers in English. At Villa Davanzati, in Montughi, the son and brother was to invest his learning and his wealth to bring to life the largest museum of antique arms in the world, and then to donate it to the city'. Thomas Stibbert is one of the Cemetery's twelve participants in the Peninsula and Waterloo battles against Napoleon. Formerly buried here were Thomas Stibbert and Erminia Stibbert, the father and sister of Colonel Stibbert, their bodies now exhumed to the Allori Cemetery where their chapel has become a ruin. Their portraits are in the Museo Stibbert. One wishes their chapel could be rebuilt here. An oleander, the last one left, grows beside the memorial stone. Jeffrey Begeal notes that the James Lorimer Graham (E12) papers at Houghton Library include the funeral notice to take place 'Dr Wilson begs to invite his friends to be present at the Funeral of his wife, Jeannette Wilson, which will take place at the Cemetery Porta Pinti on Tuesday evening the 19 inst. at half past four o'clock, May 18, 1874', and his own note of sending a cross of white flowers to cover the coffin. Webbs have further materials on the baptisms of their six children. This would be the Dr Wilson who attends Elizabeth Barrett Browning (B8) and Cornelia Amory Goddard Loring (AB5). The 1874 List of the Royal College of Physicians of London lists Dr William Wilson, of Florence, Italy, as an M.D. of Gottingen University on its page 24: 'William Wilson, M.D. Gott., Florence, Italy'. Harriet Frankes Webster Pellew is the daughter of the wealthy and beautiful Creole Lady Holland by her first marriage to Sir Godfrey Webster of Battle Abbey and Powdermill, Sussex, while her husband is the son of Edward Pellew, Viscount Exmouth, who stopped Algerian pirates from selling Europeans into slavery, among them the Consul in Algiers, B97/ HUGH MACDONELL, Sector B. NDNB entry. The Hon. Peter I. Pellew adds: Harriet Frances Pellew and her husband Admiral the Hon. Sir Fleetwood Broughton Reynolds Pellew had a daughter called Harriet Bettina Frances Pellew (who died 9 November 1886 and who is also buried in Florence), who through her marriage to the Earl of Orford had 2 daughters, Lady Dorothy Elizabeth Mary Pellew Walpole and Lady Maude Mary Pellew Walpole, both of whom married Italians, the Duke of Balzo and the Prince of Palagonia, and are both buried in Italy'. The Pellews' memorial slab has not weathered well at all and it seems the monument for the husband sculpted by Félicie de Fauveau, see photograph in her album, now owned by Lord Crawford, was never put in place. I copied the Romney painting of Lady Holland and gave it to Godfrey Webster, an Old Etonian, then residing at the Fazenda de Nova Vida he built in the jungle of Minas Gerais, the Trust having sold Powdermill House where we grew up together, and the family portraits by Lely, Van Dyke, Romney, etc, being forbidden to leave Britain. Godfrey died following a tractor accident before my letter telling him I was now looking after his relatives' graves could reach him. When I had visited him at Minas Gerais I saw the school Godfrey Webster founded after the manner of Paulo Freire and met its 14-year-old school teacher. An Australian convict ship was named the 'Sir Godfrey Webster'.
